The Beginning of a New Hope

Postby Phil.Priest » Wed Dec 23, 2009 11:59 pm

The Bastion was ruined. It's walls had crumbled. The magic had faded. The Hope within had been lost.

Dead Souls were seen lying in the rubble, in various states of decay. Some almost completely faded from view, others merely ghosts of what they were but they still faded. Nothing could be done to save these poor lost beings. Some of the rubble faded in and our of existance as the magic that formed it wavered and failed... light and life magic was hard to bind in this place...

Other things too could be found within the debris, silver and white elven looking creatures, more martial than their Emissary but definately kin to him. The Guardians of the Bastion. They to, had fallen. Without the Bastion or those who guarded the souls within Despair was given free reign upon the ravaged souls who had no haven to find solace within...

And that is how they found it. Destroyed beyond repair, the souls and walls slowly vanishing from reality.

The Heroe's who remained within the Hopewastes by choice, who offered their aid and service to Hope's Emissary and Shining One came within sight of the once magnificent haven. As one they all stopped and looked on, trying to see what it had been, trying to see what it would become. One of them stopped and his eyes closed, he stood folded in the embrace of Hope's Shining One, flooded with loss and guilt. Slowly they made their way to the edges of the place and began to set up a temporary encampment until the magic could be bound to begin rebuilding.

The Hopebringer's magic created wards which would keep all but the most powerful abominations out... unless he needed to, Kan Slarr's gift of power would not be used.

Soon enough torches burned and fires brightened the camp, clothing and bedding was gathered and soon the small group of heroes had a suitable place to rest. With no sunrise, and just constant twilight, they took shifts in resting and would continue until they had strenghened the defences, brought souls to join them and they knew that soon enough they would be needed to start removing the evil that flowed over this land like the sunlight over Valmaneth...

What seems like days pass, the dead souls completely faded from the existence of the Hopewastes, the 'living' striving for and making the most of what is available. The magic which infused the walls still extinguishing, those where it has left decaying faster than they should.

As the time within the ruins passes more souls join them, some the heroes from Pathway even recognise... The numbers within the small camp grow rapidly over a short period, all are welcomed to the encampment which will become the New Bastion of Hope by the two senior most servants the Lady of Hope, Aquilla, The Shining One of Hope, and Kalist, The Emissary of Hope.

Undead and members of the demonic host are seen scouting the edges of the once previous unassailable fortress' boundaries, testing the strength of the wards and the organisation of the defences... those that were here now had to begin working together to keep each other alive and to begin rebuilding...

The next few days, weeks and months were critical to everyones survival...

The demons started to mass. It would soon be time for them to tear down this feeble attempt to rebuild the Bastion. As they prepare for their charge, a single figure appears on the edge of the camp. Arms raised, and starting to rise in the air, his blue robes and hair bellowing in his newly summoned wind. Across the normally breezeless sky of the Hopewastes, his voice carries on gusts of magical air.

"Powers of the Storm come hither at mine call,
for here is thunder and lightning for thee all,
Powers of my people, of thunderous might,
I call upon thee by my birth given right.
A Storm I require, a tempest as of old,
Lightning striking swiftly and winds harsh and cold.
By my powers, I do bring thee here, and CALL LIGHTNING!
"

Almost instantly a rumbling fills the sky, and clouds start to gather above the demon army, a bolt of lightning streaks from the cloud and strikes out at a lesser minion, melting him on the spot. The figure's blades appear in his hands in the blink of an eye, and he starts to glow with a silvery white light as another, unarmed figure joins him. Side by side the Emissary and Shining One's presence rallies those in the camp who can fight to arms, and a small force gathers. Outnumbering the force of Hope by ten to one, the demons laugh at this pitiful number, and at themselves for feeling fear. The laughter is replaced with a howl of pain as one of the larger demons is struck by lightning and knocked to the ground. Shaking himself, he stands again, and leads the charge towards the camp. Over the rumbling of thunder, Aquilla's voice can be heard rallying his comrades...

"...we will not let them take this from us! We will bring Hope to this place! We will stand against the darkness and be a bright light in this place! We will shine forth across this eternal night, blazing as a bright dawn! For in the light, the goodly are welcomed! And with the light, the darkness is banished!"

Lightning bolts from his fingers to burn into his demon foes, and he flies towards the advancing line, unaware whether the others are following. Blades drawn back he seem almost like an eagle in flight, diving towards his prey. Those watching are stunned for a second by this sight, before charging after Aquilla, with a rallying cry.

And so the two battle forces met, shadows and death bouncing from the warded heroes of Hope, lightning striking down any demons it can. A small hope, a desperate one, and a battle like no other...

Ducking and weaving like never before, Aquilla fights with his new found skills. Blades turned away with his hands and feet, blows that should knock his blade from his hand, merely causing him to flick his wrists. Those nearby see a translucent image of a serkainian man in absent blade robes covering Aquilla's body. The memory of Tsu-Ling moves as one with the new Shining One, allowing both their combat prowess to stand before the tide of evil. His allies fall around him, but their wounds are healed by Kalist before their souls are destroyed forever. Aquilla's blades, glowing with life, light and storm magics cut into demon after demon. He kills some with single blows, others with many more. He ducks and dive away from lethal blows. The odd one catches him, but he feels Kalist's soothing magics mend the wound instantly.

A huge demon, with a massive axe rises before him, obviously a holder of some rank in the demon horde. His eyes lock with Aquilla's and the two charge at each other, an understanding shared between them - only one would leave this fight alive. His right hand blade parries a downward sweep of the axe, and his left swings forward, slicing into the demon's leg. With the strength of twenty men, the demon swipes at the blue elf, Aquilla only just manages to duck out of the way, before sending a blast of air and rain at the beast, sending him backwards so he can catch his breath. Revitalised Aquilla leaps forward and brings both blades down upon the demon, slicing into his rotting flesh. The demon reaches out with death magic, trying to kill Aquilla with but a touch, but the blessings of his Emissary prevent the spell from having any effect.

Aquilla releases his swords, send a bolt of lightning from each hand before dragging his blade out of the demon's chest. The creature howls with pain as Aquilla twists the blades as he draws them out, his cry of agony is cut short however as his head is removed from his shoulders with a two bladed swipe from The Shining One. As one demon falls another takes its place...Aquilla sighs...

"Not a moments rest?! For Hope and Freedom!"

He cries as he charges the next foe and the battle for Hope's Bastion continues...

Gareth was a little tired of being dead. The priests had talked of rest, of salvation, and of peace. There was nothing like that here. Instead the human found himself in the middle of a battle, some apparent forces for good against a bunch of demons. He was wearing what he had worn when he died, beautifully crafted leather armour, along with fairly normal bow and some arrows that looked like they had seen better days. Infact, it would be nice to see the daytime again. It always felt dark here, and the one place he had been told was safe apparently was destroyed and under attack from an army of demons... things never went well for the poor.

He watched as the forces of hope cut a swathe through the demons, all of them unified together, he himself had been part of this strange spell, protecting him and apparently strengthening his bow. Gareth didn't really understand but they had seen his bow, pointed towards the hordes and spouted something about the greater good. Now he stood in the middle of a battle, bodies littering the ground. He saw the blue elf butcher the large demon, he saw the light angel heal his 'allies' it was a lot to take in. He stood with his bow pointed down, trying to remember. He dodged the best he could, often a strenge white shield taking all the force out of the blows. Suddenly he turned seeing a huge demon with black skin, horns twisted and rotted flesh hanging from it's shoulders. Teeth drowned in blood, flowing out of it's mouth and to the floor, it's muscular arms weilding a large spear. It roared, spraying blood over the human, who was trembling where he stood. He thought about reading it's mind but was certain he knew what it was thinking. It reared up, arms above it's head, and slammed the spear down vertically, sending the metal blade crashing down towards Gareth's head. He closed his eyes, perhaps the next life would be better than this. He braced himself against the pain...

...but there was nothing...

he slowly opened his eyes, hoping to see the next life, instead all he could see was blue. The storm elf stood infront of him, his swords, crossed into a scissor shape had caught the spear and he was struggling with the demon. Gareth paused, he didn't know what to do; should be abandon the elf and run? Should he stay and fight? Should he stand there gaping and hope for the best? Then Gareth remembered the most important thing he had ever been taught. The primary fact of his life, the sole ethos of his existence; why make decisions, when you can ask someone who has a higher rank.

Mr Aquilla Sir, can I shoot it now please?

Kendra skirts the edge of the battle, her sword drawn and all her senses alert for these 'demons' trying to creep around the flanks, and for any of her new Pack who might fall. The elfs who fought and shone with dazzling light seemed to hold them back, but while she knew herself to be but a kitten in this place, and that the elfs were great cats, there were other kittens, and even great cats might succumb to the avalanche of creatures that seemed to want to destroy the place her Pack Leader said would bring Hope to them all.

One such creature springs at her, or at least the place she was standing, until she leaps away, landing several feet away and turning to face the emaciated-looking demon with a hiss and a sweep of her bone blade that bites deeply into one of its skinny arms. It howls and drops its dagger, and as it stoops to grab it, Kendra leaps at it with a snarl. Caught off-balance it falls backwards and Kendra lands on top of it; pinning it as she finishes it with several swipes of her blade. The battle continues to rage around her as she quickly jumps to her feet and wrinkles her nose at the vile stench of the thing's blood. Shaking it off her she looks around for enemies to kill and others of her new Pack to help.

Reith had been skirting around the demonic horde for a while when he heard the cries of battle being joined. Another battle. Demons on elves, this time? Or perhaps one of the undead factions had angered them. It may even be some grand infighting. It didn't really matter, there were no battles here that concerned him. He continued to skirt around the demonic army, until he saw the ruins. He knew immediately that this was the place he'd been seeking, and it had clearly fallen far and hard. If there was anything left to salvage there...

He looked over at the demonic horde, and a flash of light caught his attention. He could barely make out the figures fighting the demons, surrounded and outnumbered as they were, but... he continued to circle, approaching as carefully as he could towards the fight.

There! Another flash and a huge demon reels back under an unseen assault. In the brief clearing, Reith can just about make out a figure, glowing, calm. In an instant, his mind clears, and he doesn't even pause to consider the glow that envelops him. There is a battle here that concerns him. In that one glimpse, he'd seen a figure he recognised and he knows why the Mother has no words for him. Old allies were fighting an overwhelming force in a desperate stand. There is only one thing to do. Reith grins, and charges.

Shield held before him, Reith barrels into the ranks of the lesser demons and doesn't stop. He hold his axe back behind him and presses on, knowing that to get surrounded in this battle would be the end. When the momentum of his initial charge is spent, he presses on, dodging around the creatures as best he can, battering smaller ones aside with his shield. He holds his axe ready until finally he bursts through into the corpse-strewn heart of the battle. He glances around to see who is present, and gives Kalist a nod, though whether the ... elf? sees it in the midst of the battle is doubtful.

He turns just in time to deflect a demon's attack with his shield, readies his axe and gets to work.

In the distance there is a tall, but otherwise unremarkable dead tree. In the tree lounges an elf, watching the battle, not really understanding what it sees. It is clearly the culmination of a hunt, but the predator pack is enormous and the prey seem powerful, too. This does not concern it, however, as much as the movements of one particular of the prey-pack. It watches the other elf, transfixed. It fights with ferocity and grace both terrible and beautiful, but that is not what captivates the observer. The other elf fights with familiarity. The way it moves, the way it holds its swords, following up from one attack to the next, interspersing physical attack and magical assault to keep its foe off-balance and reeling. The way it shifts through the battle, refusing to be held in place, pausing only to deliver another devastating attack. These are as familiar to the observer as the blades hanging at its waist. Not all of its actions, certainly, but a great deal of its stance and purpose and fury are familiar. For this other fights in a very similar style to the observer.

The elf in the tree wonders if perhaps this other could be the one that taught it to fight, lifetimes ago... or perhaps... the thought is gone before it can be pinned down, but the observer's curiosity grows with every blow it sees. Still, it is not enough to join a fight alongside prey. The observer remains still and watches. Perhaps it can scavenge something to sate that curiosity from their corpses once the hunter-pack has moved on.

After spinning and whirling, slicing through demon after demon, Aquilla takes a moment to catch his breath again. In the distance, he sees a young human with a bow, about to be speared by a huge demon. Gritting his teeth and hoping he can make it in time he runs forward whispering a prayer to his gods and his ancestors...

"Let me take flight!"

With one great bound he leaps onto the shoulder of a demon, swinging downward with his left hand blade, and then launching himself in an almighty jump. In mid-air he closes his eyes, time seems to slow as he twists himself in a typhoon and calls on the storm...

"I call on thee, powers of air, take me now from here to there..."

He disappears in a flash of lightning, phasing in between the demon and the cowering human. His blades move faster than he can think, catching the thrusting spear, and he hears the archer speak as he strains against the demon's strength.

"Mr Aquilla Sir, can I shoot it now please?"

Aquilla grins, despite his situation. He surges against the demon, forcing the spear back. He brings his blades across his body and slices across the demon's chest.

"Yes Gareth, any time now is good!"

Aquilla notes with satisfaction as the arrow thuds home in the demon's eye. Aquilla sends a few bolts of lightning at the demon for good measure, before sending the human a quick grin, and then running on. He notices a Larkant with an axe and shield come barreling through, and grins as he recognises the grim determination on Reith's face.

"Reith! Good to see you my friend, lovely day for it!"

With that he laughs, to himself and dives towards the next demon...

As various skirmishes take place and the deceased heroes move to make a stand against the scouting force a voice ressonates out, touching heroes and other mortal souls who have picked up weapons to fight against the darkness.

As wounds are dealt, they are healed by the soothing words pouring from The Emissary.

As new comers join the battle the silvered elf looks out and prays that he can keep the number of wounded down. This was but their first fight here... it would not be their last... however they needed their strangth to hold out until defences could be created and erected...

Still, as long as Hope's Shining One stood and cut away the taint from the land, he would stand and heal the wounds of those standing against that darkness.

"Never a better time to be slaughtered by an army of demons!" Reith shouts back to Aquilla, even before he'd registered who was speaking. He back-hands the demon he's fighting with his shield, then drops it with a hard blow from his axe before it can recover. "Shame the demons aren't up to it."

Reith had barely got the words out of his mouth, when a terrible blow strikes him from behind, knocking the wind from him, and laying him to the floor. He manages to land on his back, but can barely move as the huge demon readies a final strike. Then without warning, the disorientation and pain lifts, and Reith blocks the intended coup de grace, though from his back he finds there is little he can do but guard himself. "A little help here?" he calls to whoever might be listening.

Three arrows immediately zip past Reith, slamming into his assailant. Light exploding from their tips and staggering the demon backwards. The force at which it was struck combined with the fact that each arrow had hit a critical and painful part of it's body had confused the demon. Unused to such skill and mastery.

Standing only meters away from Reith is Gareth the archer. He holds his bow in ready position, arrow sort-of notched as he fumbles for the string. Gareth had absolutely no idea where the three arrows came from but he was sure whoever it was was far more competant than him.

As he levels his bow at the demon, he thought about his goddess of light, his Lord and his purpose.

May Asternia bless this arrow, and make it fly true!

He loosed the shaft, which went wide by about four or five meters, the huge target clearly not large enough.

Erm, just give me a moment.

The human reached for his quiver, looking for unbroken arrows.

Just hold on one moment...

With a hiss a small grey-and-black feline leaps from the darkness and darts in front of the fallen warrior. "Get up now human!"! she cries as she slashes at the demon with a bone blade.

Between the arrows and the feline's distraction, Reith wastes no time getting to his feet and rejoining the fight. "Thank you," he calls over his shoulder in the direction the arrows had come, then steps in to catch a blow directed at the feline. He staggers under the weight, but stands, and returns the favour. While his blow is less impressive than the Demons, it connects, and in it's weakened state, it doesn't take the three long to dispatch the lieutenant.

"Now that's a bit more like it!" Reith grins and faces towards the next wave, bracing himself to meet their charge.
