Between one breath and the next.

The mission had succeeded. True, the Councillor of Shadow Magic had died, but Tess was rushing his body to some mage she knew that is knowledgeable in death magic. The information was to make its way to where it would do the most good.

Derwent found himself sitting again at Este's grave. He closed his eyes in prayer..

*wibbley timeshift as Lady Eternity rips Derwent from the timeline to fix it*

.. when he opened them again the world was ash, nothing but ash from horizon to horizon. Este's grave stood in front of him now coated in black, the tree behind it a black pile.

Derwent can't help reacting, and his movement causes the ash to fly up in a dust cloud into his face. It sets him coughing and for a moment he is left gasping. Eventually he cries himself to sleep.

Next morning, Velnashar rises, much the same as he did yesterday, but the world he surveys is sorely diminished.

Derwent wakes up and spends the morning searching for the cellar and weapons cache under the burnt out ruins of the village hall.

After spending most of the day trying to locate the area where the village hall stood by walking up the local hills and trying to get his bearings, Derwent eventually finds the stone floor, by tripping over it.
