An ill omen

Postby Will » Sun Mar 04, 2012 3:15 pm

**Throughout the Jungles, refugees from all sorts of places had been making new homes. Rough shelters at first, but more and more elaborate as the weeks went past. Small communities began to spring up as people of all races began to co exist and make the best of a bad situation. The jungles provided rich sources of food and crafting materials and these communities, as the weather improved, began to flourish.

The Underdwellers remained separate, favouring their caves and shying away from the strange races on the surface, but overall remaining civil.

Life was almost good for some of these people.**

**Jasmine returned from the water hole, a bucket of water in each hand. She whistled as she travelled, content with life. Her children were provided for, her partner getting his satisfaction from manual labour building shelters. Yes, life was...

A wail of anguish caused Jasmine to quicken her pace, spilling some water as she did so. As she entered their makeshift village she made her way to the crowd of people in the centre. A wailing woman, Nicola her name was, cradled her young son in her arms... dead. Asking around it was clear that the child had become ill very suddenly and died within hours.

Shaken, Jasmine travelled quickly to her shelter, keen to check her own children were fine. They look up to her expectantly as she comes in, her youngest, a daughter, running up and hugging her. Breathing a sigh of relief, Jasmine turned to put the pails down.

The daughter coughs, and the sound is enough to make Jasmine jump, spilling some water on the ground. As she turns to her daughter, she is unaware of the light smoke rising from where the liquid spilt, and the swiftly dying grass**

**Stephen sighed deeply. It had taken days to sort out the water problem, but that was nothing compared to digging the graves. Maybe it would have been better to burn them after all.

He returned to his work, tending to the crops. It would be a relief when these could be harvested. Months of living on stored supplies and recently just meat was starting to wear thin. Of course, the hunters had been struggling to even manage the meat recently. Stephen really was hungry.

Picking at a potato, it came up surprisingly easily. Inspecting it, Stephen noticed some black markings, which on closer inspection turned out to be the signs of rot. Throwing it to one side, he collected the next one. Also rotten. Fear gripped him as he carried on pulling up rotten potato after rotten potato. Sinking to his knees amongst the ruined crop, he resisted the knowledge that he would have to go check the others...**

**Slightly Grey groaned in frustration. The screaming of the overworlders was driving her mad. She could understand their upset. Having to live above ground, enduring the weather... but yet, this time, their anguish seemed more intense than their usual. It was really getting annoying to be honest. They really were rubbish at keeping their thoughts and emotions in check. At least it made them easier to manipulate.

Exhausted at the constant nagging screams, Slightly Grey began to make her way to the surface. Perhaps with a bit more proximity she could calm them down, at least give her time to get some rest.

Stepping into the glaring sunlight Grey shielded her eyes. That bloody sun... Once her vision returned however, she rather wished it hadn't. Whilst she wasn't the overworlders biggest fan... well.

Bodies lay everywhere, just littering the floor. Some seemed half eaten, or maybe decayed. But that didn't make sense, they'd been screaming not so long ago. Figures moved between the fallen, indistinct.

Bile rose in Slightly Grey's throat, causing her to half gasp, half choke. turning, she dashed towards the tunnel entrance, desperate to get away from the scene. Ignoring the movement in the corner of her eye, she entered the cool darkness. Once she was 40 feet down, she turned at the sound of scrabbling rocks. A figure silhouetted the entrance. Lashing out with the full force of her mind, a power that would usually melt the brain of any foe, Grey was alarmed and bewildered that the creature continued its shambling approach. Followed by another. And another.

As she sank to her knees, a single tear trickling down her cheeks, death descending upon her the last thoughts that flashed through that powerful but ultimately useless mind were,

"What have I led to my people?"**

"Sir, we have an update on the Arnad Gaurhoth situation"

**William Harwood looked up from the table. Nodding to the messenger he listened as the report was given**

"We have completely lost contact Sir. All means, mundane and magical have failed to reach the dome. The squad assigned to protect the Sentinel is also failing to report in. Last messages indicate there were some problems with food and water supplies but nothing overwhelming."

**Harwood stared blankly at the maps before him. Several locations were marked and short scribbled notes covered the table. After a few seconds he spoke.**

"How is the research going on the portable protection?"

"Pretty much there Sir..."

"Very well. We need to hire Heroes and send them to investigate as soon as possible. I estimate 3 days travel, do you agree?"

"Yes Sir"

"Very well... we shall have them leave in the morning. Get the word out."
