Skill for Mana, Mana for Skill

Postby Luke » Thu Jun 12, 2014 1:05 pm

Sorry for all the posts today, work is slow.

Years ago there was talk about introducing a skill along the lines of:

Magical Capacity (*)
Cost: 5 skill
The buyer of this skill gains 5 maximum essence. This ability can be bought multiple times and does not increase in cost when bought.

What was the consensus?

Used to be you could do something similar. Don't see why it couldn't be an option :-)

I think the skill cost as you've stated is currently a little too high. Meditation acts as a strong counterbalance to the essence attrition game. Something closer to 3 for 5 might be the sweet spot.

I know there was some talk about a while ago about nerfing Med (which I'm not against, I personally find a lot of enjoyment from the situations where you're at low mana, rationing everything you've got and making the most economical decisions possible. Real triage healing style.) I don't know what became of that.

If Med did get a swing of the nerf bat, the skill cost above would probably be more in line.

1 for 1 seems fine to me. Any higher and it just gets a bit unbalanced towards "end game" imo

also, I think mages should be able to get a faster med, even if its a first med per hour or first influx per hour or something

What about a cunning? skill.

Mental acumen
Skill: 10
The user must first purchase the meditate ability. The buyer of this skill no longer expends essence when entering meditate, and gains essence as normal.

Is this too strong, makes a sort of constant med possible, obviously still interrupted etc.

Okay so 16 players, 10 skill adventure.

1 telefret hopeslayer, 15 telefret high mages all members of the arcane univserity.

Spend all 160 skill on essence, bar what you need for create undead. +5 per person for being telefret.

that's 400 ish essence for the team, -2 for share power, 398 ish essence for making one undead.

Give it null, skeletal, paralysis touch, caster, intelligent, specialist, and then about 80 ranks.

This is broken. Ban immediately for all the 0 times this will happen!!!!

I meant either/or. Jesus, you guys need to take a chill pill.

And no chill pill isn't in the Core Rules.

Either/or null, skeletal, paralysis touch, caster, intelligent, specialist?

Some of those seem better than the other :)

Imo the people that run out of essence are mages so could just make this a magic ability instead of a Cunning ability, if you wanted to make it an ability.

Though it feels like a skill, not an ability. If you wanted it as an ability, wouldn't it be.

Mental acumen
Skill: 10
Essence: 0
Requires: Meditate
As per meditate except for the above essence cost.

Yeah I had the same issue with placing it, what about academic? Warriors can buy it but it's expensive whereas mages get it cheaper. It doesn't limit options either and that way it could stay as a skill?

Or put it under 'Other' with meditate so the cost is the same for everyone?

Yeah really was just thinking about Mages because it was Andy's preference.

Improved Meditate 10 skill.

I like the idea of spending skill on mana a lot, it certainly helps the early game mages quite a bit without unbalancing anything. Gives you something to spend skill on later as well as we all know that the late game tails off a bit.

As an afterthought, if we do think that meditate for free is a little silly because it means you can always have it 'turned on' (bow chikka), then maybe as Andy suggested earlier we do something like:

Improved Meditate
Requires: meditate
6 Skill
After the first 10 minutes of meditation the user gains additional essence equal to their threshold. So at 35 skill the user would receive 4 essence after 10 minutes, instead of the usual 2.

This means that after 10 minutes the net result is the same, free med, but means you can't flippantly go in and out of med.

Thoughts? I appreciate it's not nearly as succinct!
