Orcish Garrison.

**Marmenputa sat by the fire at Castra Paluri'Meles, the central orcish garrison about half a mile behind Kellbeck's Barricades. The crackling of the fire drowned out the distant howls and nearer moans. He pulled his hood down over his eyes to shield them from the smoke, and took a swig from his flask of firewater.**

We should be taking the fight to them... Sitting here, waiting for death? That's not us!

**Marmenputa ignores such comments from some of his more impatient comrades.**

Damn right! Why does Gungrol listen to that child, Harwood?

**He maintains his composure, sucking a few more drops from the near-empty flask.**

We know their army's massing in the hills, we can hold them there. Valley by valley, we could wipe them out.

**The three others cheer each other on, but Marmenputa concentrates on the fire. He watches it dance, and he sees the smoke twisting. Without looking up, he swings out his right arm, his black sleeve inflating, knocking one of the Orcs clean off his seat. The three stand over him and bark their disapproval at the shaman.**

No, Brothers. We cannot. I understand your fervor, and your courage serves us well. But you severely underestimate our foe. Their mere presence on Pargon makes the very pulse of Velmaneth weaker. Throwing bodies at them will not solve the problem. Worse: it gives the enemy more numbers! No, this is a war that will be one on a few moments, by a few individuals. There is a way to defeat the Soulless, but even so great an army as ours cannot achieve it. Somewhere out there are the few Heroes who possess the power, the skill, the nous, or perhaps just the serendipity to destroy Quarin's presence on Velmaneth.

So, what? We let other people control our destiny?

Not at all. I am saying we realise that which we can and cannot control. What we can do is protect this land, and its people until it is safe to return home. The Mother asks that we act to preserve the bloodlines of the living. She has sent her Avatar to us, and I have no doubt that Dellam will ensure victory. We must hold the line.
