Pain, Darkness, Dispair... Marcus's Fate.

Postby Chee » Sun Dec 27, 2009 11:16 pm

The Darkness that pressed down threatened to squeeze the life out of him and choke him to death. It surrounded and consumed him, like being drowned in a puddle of liquid fear, the darkest of sin made manifest.

He opened his eyes. And with alarming suddenness, nothing happened.

Unsure, Marcus tries to lift his hand to his eyes to check they were open, the darkness so complete there seemed to be no difference. The piercing clink of metal cuts though the chilling silence of the icy air as cold steel presses into Marcus’s wrists. Moving as little as he dared, he discovers his hands are bound by iron behind him and attached to the rough hard surface of uncut stone.

A voice in the darkness emerges like a snake slithering out from under a child’s bed. Its tones are soft but deadly and even in this darkness, it is clear the words are spoken from a terrible smile. The kind of smile you see on a Fox just when the rabbit realises it shouldn’t have come out today.

So, our guest has awaken

A blinding light flares in the darkness. The crimson flames of magical fire slowly give way to the soft glow of the candle now alight. As his eyes adjust, the pitiful light reveals figures standing in the darkness. Their gruesome features warped into even more hideously ghastly apparitions by the harsh shadows that hide the true nightmare of their appearance.

Worse than the terrible creatures that now lurk within the darkness before him, is the pain. The slightest movement sears his flesh and glass shards of heart wrenching pain tear their way up his spine. The panic and fear drives into his heart like a dagger and sends fresh waves of purest agony coursing though his body.

Looking around as best he can, Marcus see’s he is in a small chamber of a natural cave with a number of arcane symbols scratched into the floor. He is bound to the wall and his hands are behind his back. Fresh cuts upon his body ooze blood as he gasps at the stale air thick with the smell of sickly blood and rotting death.

And how are we feeling this fine evening?

Marcus cannot quite grasp the situation - how did he come to be here? No matter. He knew where there was life, there was Hope.

"Oh, just fine and dandy. Bit stiff around my back. Don't suppose you could give us a massage?"

Marcus winks lasciviously in the direction of the voice.

Searing pain fills Marcus' mind - like thousands of red hot blades tearing at the flesh all over his body. He feels a familiar sense of loneliness, like Hope has turned from him, in Her place....a deliciously evil voice, smooth like honey yet filled with menace...

"You're going to die here Marcus. And you have no-where to go. Kalist has left this world, your precious emissary has betrayed you. He destroyed the Bastion of Hope. There is no-where for your soul to hide...I will find it, and I will make it mine. You will suffer for all eternity...none will help you, not your lady, nor her emissary...both are lost to you. But I...I am here. Just say the word, just accept me, and you will be clothed in my mantle, healed of your wounds, and the power to destroy this lich in front of you...he has a phylactery...I know where it is, and how to destroy it...just the word...think of all the Hope you can bring...and without a living emissary or paladin...you could take up the station...."

Unaware of what passes in Marcus’s mind the skeleton continues...

A dark malicious chuckle echoes around the room.

But of course...

The voice in the dark emerges to reveal the dark robed skeleton from earlier. He slowly approaches Marcus and reaches for his shoulder.

Please... tell me when you feel better...

With the last word lingering for a second and his tone dripping with sarcasm, the skeleton squeezes Marcus's shoulder with one hand, crushing it with Unholy strength until the crack of bone announces the breaking of his collar bone. (10 strength)

The Skeleton gives an evil grin, his voice dripping with innocent sarcasm..

How’s that?

Marcus mouth opens wide, howling his silent agony; his shoulder is a rictus of pain. His world turns black, for a moment. When he feels sufficiently recovered, he looks up at the skeleton.

"Well, that certainly eased up that shoulder. You have my thanks, kind sir. Tell me, have you ever considered Hope as an option? She really is the most wonderful and caring of goddesses. Even now, I know that she is with me, and that this pain and trial is but a crucible from which I will emerge a better person. I know that I will never be tested beyond the limits of my strength to resist. I forgive you for what you must do, for playing out your part."

In his head, Marcus replies to Despair. Oh, hello again. You know, having been your paladin, I appear to have lost all fear of you completely. When you took over, you knew me completely. But I also knew you. You have no control over me. I believe what you said of you and Hope being two sides of the same coin. It has the ring of truth about it. I simply choose to be on Hope's side. Like my old teacher taught me, yin and yang are two sides of the same person - but a person has the choice of which he follows. I choose yang. I choose light. I choose Hope. And in her sweet embrace, you cannot harm me. You may as well accept that Hope in the heavens, and her followers on the earth, are the yang to your yin. I know there is darkness in me, as there is darkness in all things. I simply choose to accept that it is there, and let Hope dictate my actions.

Marcus smiles.

The skeleton looks a Marcus, giving a curious little smile..

Interesting... Even after the procedure your previous human perceptions and your emotional state is intact. Combine with your unusual high tolerance for pain, you seem almost jovial. Lets continue...

The skeleton releases Marcus’s shoulder and walks back into the shadows. There is a rustling of paper and he emerges again, a piece of parchment and quill in hand. He makes a few notes then looks at Marcus, a calculating look upon his face.

Hum... You ask me have I considered hope as an option?.. Well my friend, I in fact have considered it to great length and I have a few..ideas I think you should consider.

Let me begin by saying that I was there at the start. I was there when hope itself became a deity. I have known the two figure heads of your religion for quite some time, even before their deity became what it is today. There are a few fundamental flaws in your ideology that I find most hilarious.

Allow me to explain...

Most if not all of the gods are embodiments of physical things or actions. Tangible things that in themselves exist. The earth, the weather, destruction, war, even drinking. These are all either actions in themselves or physical certainties within the material world. Even causing death and the state of being dead itself is something that is, or isn’t. So my question is, why anyone would create a religion that is in itself, an uncertainty? And by knowing the certainty of the situation, the faith itself becomes redundant.

Hope is about truly believing that the world is not or will not be the way it is. A peasant may ‘hope’ that his crops will not fail this year so he may feed his family. While despair is on the other end of the scale, sees the world for what it is and revels in the misery of truly knowing the truth of failure.

By accepting the truth, there is no hope. For hope in itself denies the truth and replaces it with a lie that the individual wishes it to be. Therefore, hope in itself is a delusion and a lie.

Ironically, not only does the church promote believing in lies but Hope is also is a church of torturers. If someone hopes for something, and it is fulfilled, then there is no longer any need for hope for that which they hope for is now in their grasp. You cannot hope to gain what you already have. Therefore, the only way someone can truly believe in hope is if they are never fulfilled in what they desire. The church of hope is basically a personification of the concept of ‘what you don’t have, pray to me and I might let you have it...eventually.’ And if the church ever fulfils that desire, they lose the very thing that drives that person to believe. Even more ironically, if that which is hoped for is not delivered, then that person becomes susceptible to despair. The greater one hopes for something the greater the tragedy they suffer when they face the truth of reality.

The skeleton moves right up to Marcus, looking him straight in the eye.

You say hope is with you. You say that you will never be tested beyond the limits of your strength to resist. So you are basically saying that no matter what evidence is put before you. No matter the overwhelming certainty of a situation, you shall always be able to delude yourself that things are, or can be different?

That does not sound like blind faith but more like sheer, self inflicted stupidity. You truly believe that everything shall be alright just because you hope it will?

The skeleton slowly moves away from Marcus, his face returning to its move passive shadowy self.

Well now... while you think about that, I shall consider how to deal with our new problem...

Making a few more notes on the parchment in his hand, the skeleton leaves the room. It is almost a full hour before he returns; all the while the remaining undead lurking in the shadows, watching him like hungry jackals waiting for the smallest excuse to lash out and tear him to shreds.
The skeleton enters with a number of small objects and scrolls in his hands. Putting them aside he lifts up a large slab of rock life with inhuman strength and lays it on the floor like a crude table.

Bring him to me.

The undead move in unison. Marcus only has a moment to see them descend upon him before suddenly his world is plunged into icy darkness and silence. There is no encroaching sound of the approaching undead, no stench of rotting flesh. All he is aware of, is the feeling of the wall behind him, the cold steel of the shackles on his wrists. The sudden grasping of many bony figures grabbing him no matter his struggles, their grip tighter than a steel collar choking the blood from his limbs. The terrible stabbing pain of his broken collarbone forcing new agony into his pounding head. He feels the shackles release and his helpless body being dragged over cold stone before the rusted metal pinches his wrists and ankles again. He is restrained to the floor, the cold hard stone of the makeshift table grinding unmercifully into his back. He can feel the cloth tear as his shirt is ripped from his body, the cold air bites at his skin as slowly the world comes back into focus.

As the darkness melts away he opens his eyes and sees the skeleton standing over him, holding a very large knife.

I’m afraid to say that we are going to have to implement some unusual measures. Unfortunately for you, you are ill suited for immediate... transcendence to become one truly blessed by my lord and so we are going to have to... prepare you.

He lowers the knife to Marcus’s chest. The vicious blade covered in dry blood hovering barely miller meters from his skin, directly over his heart.

Do not be concerned my friend... just think of this as me playing out my part in another one of your little test eh?

The knife plunges into Marcus’s flesh. The crimson blade hungrily tearing into his chest as the skeleton drags it across Marcus’s skin into an intricate runic pattern. The blade sinks deeper into his flesh as it slices into his very soul. Pain. Pure and terrible, the very meaning of the word rips its way through every part of Marcus’s being. The blade carves through this world and into the next as it inscribes horrific scars on more than just Marcus’s body.

After several terrible, excruciating minutes the skeleton finishes his sadistic work. Upon Marcus’s heaving chest, a bleeding symbol caved of flesh weeps sickly fresh blood. The damage to his body is nothing to the atrocity upon his soul. Marcus can feel the torn and shredded remains of his soul, bloody and broken within him.

Putting down the knife, the skeleton steps back.

Now my friend... This part is going to take a personal touch.

The skeleton turns around and walks into the shadows, disappearing from sight. For several moments, nothing happens. The chilly silence only broken by Marcus’s heavy breathing.

Darkness forms next to the make-shift table and slowly condenses. Emerging from the shadows like a shark gliding towards its prey from the murky depths of the sea, a black robed figure appears. His dead skin stretched tightly across his pale bony face. His hands are thin and his eyes are cruel. The deep Blood Red stare seems to glow with dark hatred in the constricting, choking darkness that closes all around. He looks at Marcus, his eyes looking past the flesh and blood, stripping away his moral shackles and gazing upon his broken, tortured soul.

Samuel smiles...

I will need to focus for this next part. Ensure he remains compliant.

One of the undead guards steps forward and stuffs part of the ripped shirt into Marcus’s mouth, tying it in place and silencing him.

Now... let us begin.

The undead move to form a circle around Marcus’s restrained body. A low, death whisper of haunting voices begins to rise and echo around the cave. Whispered prays and chanting to the true god of Undeath reverberate off the walls turning the few voices into many, the sound like an army of terrible dark venerations of the Dark master. Marcus can feel the slow build up of power bellow him like a burning fire of pain and fear. Slowly, Samuel reaches out to the single candle, his hand pausing by it as he looks Marcus in the eye. Quietly, his leans down and whispers in Marcus’s ear...

... you may not wish to be conscious for what I’m about to do to you.

The candle is snuffed out as darkness consumes him.

Samuel watches over the ritual for several days. The undead around him chanting tirelessly. Eventually he leaves the circle and withering body of Marcus to consider how Marcus might handle what fate now awaits him.

The chances are that he would most likely seek to remove what had been done to him... or destroy himself.
Samuel Smiles a twisted though as an idea comes to mind...

Finding it highly unlikely he will ever be able to reverse what has been achieved here, all I need to do is prevent him from destroying himself and wasting the blessing of my lord. Hum... I’ve already meet one who is blessed with undeath but would have considerable trouble destroying himself. Maybe he could help me...

Samuel leaves the ritual and chanting undead as he moves out into the light of day again outside the natural cave. A contingent of the undead follow him but many stay, standing guard.

We shall need a few specialists for this... return us to the primary stronghold.

One of the undead begins incanting as the others reach out to it. The magic flares and the group disappears from sight.

A few days later, Samuel returns by teleportation with a larger group of undead. He orders most the undead to stand guard and then walks inside with his General next to him, giving his report.

I believe the creature vice wanted use to encounter the occupants of the cave he took use to. It was not an ambush as such but the individuals inside where aware of our arrival and had prepared themselves by concealing themselves from detection. They did not desire or appreciate our intrusion and Vice’s claims they wished to meet use were false. The first we met was a vampire called Narcissa, former leader of the group referred to as 'the lost souls' Currently nothing more than an enforcer. She lied saying that the remaining occupants had left and then referred to Vice as a traitor. I detected animosity between vice and that creature. She then left the cave, but I had reason to believe there were others within the cave so I investigated further. There was a group of prisoners caged in the corner. There were of apparent insignificants and so there were terminated in the process of find who 'they' where. Another creature revealed itself who was adapt at concealing itself from detection. A black Shirakan of some sort but it was most unusual in subtle differences in its appearance and it was not only intelligent, but also a spell caster I believe. He gave reason to believe that you have already met him. This creature also gave us the following information. There were 4 other members than himself within this 'brotherhood' referred to as Sundaris, the Kid, Narcissa and Larky. I discovered their to be two others within the cave who did not show themselves, one of them being 'the kid' and other is proving difficult to divine. I believe this creature lie to me several times but in conclusion to your orders, I believe the individuals Vice wished to show us where neither of significances or an ambush designed by the followers of hope.

Samuel listens quietly to the report. He considers for a moment, then stops and turns to the General.

I see. Very well, I’m sure you where as diplomatic as necessary. If I do recall, you refer to several creatures I have indirectly met before. It seems odd that Vice wished me to meet those who I have already encountered and that those individuals not only anticipated the arrive of myself but fear it enough to wish to conceal themselves.
Very well. Lorick, Oversee the defence of this location with the undead we have available to us and ensure my experiment is not disturbed.

With that, Samuel walks deeper into the cave pondering what he had been told...

In the depths of the darkness, there is scraping sound of movement. The skeleton that Marcus first encountered emerges from the darkness into the unnerving red glow of the ritual circle. Marcus's body has become weaker over the last few weeks of imprisonment. Being force fed barely enough food and water to survive and having no respite from the painful magic’s or the constant chanting of the undead around him, he can feel himself being plunged into the heart of deep and dark powers by the ritual that has been his home for what feels like a lifetime.
The gag has been removed but this bonds are still in place. The cold air feels thick with shadow and death. The skeleton stands watching him, pondering...

An undead bursts in and moves to the skeleton quickly.

My lord, your attention is required immediately!

The skeleton pauses for a moment, and then follows the other undead out the room.

Marcus begins to look around him, taking note that almost all the powerful undead have left the room.
