A shadowed courtyard inside one of the fortresses of Pathway

Postby Litzana » Tue Feb 01, 2011 9:31 pm

At first, a quiet tapping sound is heard before anything is seen. Then, a figure fades into view in a deep shadow beneath the only tree in that particular outdoorsy area.
The young Shadow Elf flattens herself against the aforementioned tree, glancing around to make sure that no-one was there. When it became apparent that there wasn't anyone there, she relaxed and pulled from the bag at her side a small hide-bound book; her book of tales, her pride and joy. Every single tale she'd heard, found and recorded were within these covers, and most of them, if the book was to fall into the wrong hands, would cost her her life.
She sat and pulled her raven-feather quill from behind one pointed ear and sucked it to get the ink flowing. It had been a gift from another bard, and he'd promised her that the ink would never run out.
She thought for a moment, looking up at the square patch of clouded sky that she could see, subconciously drumming her fingers on the blank page. What to write... She'd finally got away from the elves that had been trying to get her to sing for them - fools, she didn't sing, she was a storyteller, why wouldn't they just accept that? - with an idea in her head for a short piece of fiction that would keep them entertained, and it had gone right out of her head, replaced by the ever-present rhythm that drummed through her head day and night.

After an hour or so of deliberation, she gave up and closed her book with a snap, tucking the quill back behind her ear. The idea had completely gone from her head, which was annoying, since she remembered it was something about the ineptness of blonde humans, which of course everyone liked to hear about.
The peacefullness of the courtyard was deafening. The tiny outdoorsy space made her uncomfortable - she was made for night skies and roaming plains, not citedels and oppressive superiors.
And when she had tried to get away from all this, maybe take a break between missions - not that she ever got any good ones, mostly as record keeper for a minor patrol, the sexist bastards - but when she had tried to do so, she'd been barred from leaving the fort. The two bards at the other forts - High elves both, who acted like they had metal rods suck up their- ahem, anyway - were also going stir-crazy, thay just didn't show it. But she knew the signs.
The only way any Elf was getting out of the occupied forts was on an official mission, as a spy, or dead.

She stands, stretches and sighs. She'd like to stay longer but the *actual fighters* were probably in need of her tales.
She stares off into the distance for a moment, tapping her foot, thinking. If she hadn't gone along with this thrice-damned army she'd still be free as the wind, to travel anywhere she wished and spread tales throughout Pargon...
Maybe she'd have visited Ingolé, the city that held the Arcane University, by now.
Maybe she'd have a few new tales to add to her collection.
Maybe the Clandestine had need of a bard...
Wait. Where'd that thought come from? She shook her head and hurried back into the torchlit corridors of the fortress. It was Lord Erathil's fate to win this war. She had to stand on his side.

And yet the seeds of doubt were planted that day...
