Tome of Magic (Spell Grimoire) - Errata Requests

Postby Telumehtar » Sun May 21, 2006 5:00 pm

Please post here with proposed updates / changes / problems that you have with the Tome of Magic (Updates will be made directly to the online version to start with). Please note that I will be moderating this thread heavily and treating it as a todo list.

Are there going to be any new spells for different elements being placed in the Tome of Magic? Is this one of the things that you are modifying?

The spells in the Tome of Magic constitute the new 'Complete Spell List' which has been separated from the Power of Velmaneth book (so that the spell list can be updated independently from the rules). Some new spells will be added shortly as there are some spheres lacking in spells, but what's there is mostly taken from the old spell list with a couple dozen new spells added.

Would it be possible to have a list at the end of the book listing spells by their sphere, followed by their circle, to make it easier for checking things at-a-glance? There wouldn't have to be information about the spell, but it would be a useful reference thingy.

Yup - that was the original plan, I just didn't want to do it by hand when the website will be able to do it in a week anyhow. The idea is that the "Tome of Magic PDF" that you see there will be automatically regenerated by the website whenever the spell database is changed, including adding summary tables for all of the sphere/rank combinations at the end. Sorry, I didn't really mention that in the News Post, but it's part of the plan!

The online thing is very nifty, but it'd also be handy on the PDF

Again, sorry I didn't mention this. The Tome of Magic will have reference tables, much like the D&D Player's Handbook, to show you which spells you get with each "Cast [Sphere] Magic X" spell.

There's no fifth circle life sphere spell, apart from the specialist one (Haven)

Arse, I shall ensure that there are a few available when I've finished adding spells to the online database! I hope it will be much easier to balance when I can just click a button and see all of the spells in a certain sphere and see which areas are lacking. Fear not, I will try to add some before the coming weekend!

Shield of Purity
Sphere: Shadow

This has been fixed now, got mixed up with the Shield of Purity and the Shield of Shadow from that circle. Ooops! Thanks :)

Much as I'd love there to be a damage soak spell that's for shadow, I'm guessing that even if there was one, it wouldn't be called "Shield of Purity". Thus, I am guessing this is a mistake.

Yeah, there is global hit defence from both the sphere of Light and the sphere of Darkness. Shield of Purity and Shield of Shadow respectively grant extra global hits.

Looking at the tome it appears there is the Shield of shadow, and that's what that's probably refering to. I also might suggest that 'Shield of Light' might be a more appropriate name for Shield of Purity, cause shield of Purity sounds more like Life magic to me.

A good suggestion - Will be considered! (As long as it won't confuse people that have Shield of Purity!)

For Elemental things like dart, bolt, shield etc do you get them if you by and elemental circle? Or is it you have to buy a circle in elemental?

You get these spells when you buy a circle in any of the basic elements or in the spheres of light and shadow. So, if you've purchased "Cast Fire Magic 1", you can cast "Elemental Dart (Fire)".

This will become clearer when there are summary tables depicting what spells each rank of skill gives you access to. If you look on the Online Grimoire, then you will see that the Elemental Spells come up if you select "Fire" and "Circle 1" say!

Why is Last Stand an elemental spell? How does it fit into the 'ethos', for want of a better word, of water, earth air or fire? The other two I could see, but not the classical elements.

And are Heal 5 and Total Heal really supposed to be in the same Circle?

umm, takign a glance at the tome it looks rather a lot more idfficult to look through than the old magic list. Um, will there be a thing where the psells will be listed under the spheres or whatever just to make it easier to see what spells are air or whatever ?

One pretty big errata that I've noticed so far...

Touch of death no longer has any way to stop it. As written, once its taken affect on you, you are going to die.

If this is intentional by the refs, then it seems a little harsh, but I guess that the death specialist spell should be a little more likely to kill than it used to be... :D

Poisoning spells can create poisons up to level 20, but the elven abilities can now only go up to 4? Was this intentional?

Sunray doesnt say what amount of damage it does to affected creatures.

Remove Petrifaction. Misspelled?
So then he goes, YOU SHALL NOT PASS, and I say "I've got WINGS? I can FLY?" It was hilarious! The dwarf was tough, but the elf was delicious and they had some men and these four bite-sized guys, too. The wizard was fuming when I flew off.

There will NEVER EVER EVER be any sort of effect in Heart of Pargon that kills you outright, with no way of avoiding it... so I suspect that that is a mistake!

I'd like to add here well done john for getting it done! Looking awesome and I for one am ecstatic :)

Shielf of the elements (3) is listed in the downloadable rules, seems to have been missed off the online lists, though.

Paralyse as a water spell is likely to confuse people, more than anything. Unless, you are freezing their blood, or something...
