At the Well

Postby Ben » Tue Sep 04, 2007 10:40 pm

**Quayle looked around at what remained of Erathil's last stand, it was a mess. Bodies littered the floor and blood streaked walls and floor. He turned to the few members of the resistance that had survived this far into Dvarni**

Spread out and search the area.

**It had been niave of him to think he could get here in time, but what else could he have done? Sat and waited? They had used a lot of contacts to get here, expended many favours and exploited every trick and secret way the resistance had plotted over five decades and now they were here.

One of the resistance beckoned him over and pointed. It was a patch of earth, stained with blood and much like many other patches of ground except unlike other similar patches there was no body nearby. Someone had died there, that was certain, but their body had been taken away.

Could this be where Erathil had met his end? It was impossible to tell. He stood there staring at it for a few moments before remembering they were far from safe here. He turned back to one of the people with him**

Go, try all the old cells and bases, try to bring reinforcements

**To the others**

Search the bodies, anything you find we stockpile. We're going to try to hold here.
**He looked at their unsure faces**

We can't keep running, Erathil may be dead but his troops are still out there, if they have the well it won't be long until another rises to take his place.
**Quayle**

As the small group explore the now deserted area, they quickly find one thing amiss - at the centre of the courtyard, clearly the architectural and ritualistic focus for the entire area, there is no well. Instead there is what seems to be a natural rock formation about three feet across protruding from the paved floor. One of the resistance members informs Quayle that the stone is resonating with a tremendous amouth of magical power, beyond anything he's seen before.

**Quayle walked over to the rock. He had been avoiding the area of the well, not knowing what to expect but certainly not this. He ran his hands over it wondering whether Erathil had blocked it up somehow and whether that would inhibit magic somehow.**

Weeks stretch out into months and slowly the guards relax. As winter begins to settle into the lands, these last scant few members of Clandestine stock up what food they can and take shelter in the near-abandonned city. The group knows that they are not entirely alone here, and even some groups of high elves have returned to the former seat of their glory. In the city which has been the centre of so much war and death, it becomes hard not to imagine things lurking in the shadows - nightmarish memories made flesh and atrophied hopes wandering lost and alone.

Damien wakes for the fifth time that night to the phantom knocking. It seemed to him to be coming from the earth itself, like Gerethanax was playing out some dirge for the dead. As always, it faded almost as soon as he tried to focus on it. Hearing the guard outside approaching the door, Damien gave up on the idea of going back to sleep and swung his feet out of the bed. Time for another night shift.
