Somewhere near the base of the Morne Mountain

Postby Ben » Sat Dec 25, 2010 1:34 am

**A swirl of purple, a tingle of magic and a gateway opens, dark and foreboding. After a few seconds a tall, heavily built man steps through. His skin is pale, his eyes dark and he wears brown armour over a long dark green coat. For some reason he has his eyes tightly closed.

As he opens them, his face cracks into a smile and he takes a deep breath. As he does so, his eyes widen and he drops to the floor gasping for breath. It had been a while since he had used his lungs and suddenly his blood was racing around his body desperately trying to absorb oxygen and carry it to the organs that needed it.

Like his brain.

This was the last thought he had before he blacked out into unconsciousness. It was probably for the best, his body knew how it worked much better than he did.

Actually, for some reason, his last thought before the inky blackness took him was "I'm home".**

**He awoke, surrounded by melting snow. He was cold and wet but he relished the feeling. For the past five years he had been able to register that something was cold or wet but hadn't really felt it. In the same way he had been aware of the impact if he was struck and it sparked a response of discomfort deep within him but it was dull and the longer he had stayed there the older the memories of pain were and the less it had bothered him.

Thinking about it, the longer he had been there the more dead he had become. Here and now the discomfort of the cold was so real, sharper and more insistant than being struck with blade or magic within the Wastes. It was amazing.

It was also cold and wet so he climbed to his feet, muscles complaining about the effort.**

**He had headed to the nearest landmark, a lone mountain that rose from the swamp and forest. It was forbidding…or should that be foreboding? It was tall and therefore should provide a good view of the surrounding area.

Despite the protests of his body, he had climbed a short distance up the western side of the mountain, high enough to see over the trees and he immediately realised that the mountain was in a basin of steep cliffs. That would make this place the Heartlands and, more specifically, the side of the Morne Mountain.

As he made his way rapidly down the mountain, he imagined the irony if he were to be killed by the creatures who inhabited this place or, more likely, fell to his death. Kan Slaar would be amused. As he slowed his descent, he remembered something someone had said in the Wastes: Erathil had returned.

It hadn’t seemed that important there, a little piece of trivia that made his existence slightly easier as the forces of Kan Slaar and Erathil had been fighting for some time and this might bring a little peace for him to rest in. However, now, it seemed a lot more important as it meant he was trapped deep inside Elven territory.

He was to the far south of the Heartlands, the only way out to the far north with some forty miles in between. As he recalled the west of the Heartlands was much safer that the south as it avoided the Swamp of Tuure, the Forgotten Graves and instead took in the Boltab Grove and Shrine to Eremine so with that he began to make his way north west.**

**He felt the tingle of magic and the taste of tin in the air, someone had cast something powerful nearby. Following his senses as best he could, he headed in the direction of the power. It was dissipating fast and there were Elves nearby which were a distraction. Suddenly, searing pain shot through his foot as he kicked something hard.

He bent down to examine the metalic bundle, it was a suit of heavy chain mail, discarded relatively recently judging by the condition. Perhaps whoever cast the spell was unable to perform such magic whilst wearing metal armour.

Carefully stashing it inside a bush in order not to attract attention from the local Elven forces, he once more began to make careful progress north.**
