The Island of the Felines

Postby BlueTressym » Sat Jan 08, 2011 12:35 am

(OC: I am backdating this; sorry about the delay, although some of it was unavoidable. I plan to 'catch up' IC time to OC in subsequent posts. This is set just after Thirteen Gates, part II)

A flash of purple magic heralds the creation of a dark and swirling portal. A few seconds later a figure steps through the magical gate. Her features are a mix of cat-like and human, she wears rough leather armour and tattered brown clothing and she carries a sword of bone in one hand, with a dagger made from some kind of flint-like substance in the other.

Kendra turns to watch the now-vanishing portal and recalls her last sight in the Hopewastes, being that of Reith as he turned away from Freedom so that she could live again. Even as watches the portal disappear from existence, her body takes in its first breaths and she drops to her knees, suddenly dizzy from the first real air she has known for over a year.

She remains there for some time, her tail twitching slightly as she takes in everything; the sight of the trees, the scents in the air, the sound of small creatures scurrying, but most of all she stares up at the sky, the beautiful blue sky that she had not seen since her death at the hands of the Midari. Raising her hands towards the sky she speaks aloud, a prayer of joy and thankfulness to Eremethal, Lord of the Heavens. Feeling the breeze caress her fur, Kendra stands, her arms stretched out as if to embrace the air itself as she turns this way and that, and finally begins to take in her surroundings. She knows this place; this is where she died. A snarl forms momentarily as she recalls that day, and other memories of the Midari invaders, but she knows they are gone, thanks to Haze and the heroes that she saw in her last living moment - until now.

Freedom! She chases away the memories of death as she breathes deeply of the fresh air and begins to walk towards the mountains. Every now and then she spins or jumps, just to feel the sensation. She realises how little she had truly felt; even while fighting, it had been but a semblance of feeling, as the purple sky had radiated wrongness down upon her. Now though, the world was alive, and beautiful. She almost danced as she moved, even as she recalled whose territories these were so long ago, and thought about how things might have changed for the felines she had known. Had they missed her, she wondered. Maybe she should call in on those she had known; if for no other reason, this was undoubtedly someone's territory. They had banded together to fight the Midari and she had come to know many that she had never even seen in her peaceful life up in the mountains. Hmm, that was a thought; didn't Dreeza live near here? Kendra surveyed her battered armour; yes, she could definitely do with Dreeza's skill in leather-working.

As she made her way towards the last place she recalled Dreeza's living-place to be, Kendra wondered how she was going to explain her presence, given that she had been dead for more than a year.

Some days later...

Kendra leaves Dreeza's territory thinking about what the older feline has told her. The dead have been avenged and many felines she feared dead still live; Dreeza has grace enough to acknowledge how much the felines owe to the heroes that Haze found to save their home. Of course, as Kendra recalls, Haze has a suspicious nature, even by feline standards; those heroes would've REALLY needed to impress her to be allowed to come to the island. That is probably a good thing; if they passed Haze's tests, they were good, and the absence of Midari shows that her judgement was sound. Kendra thinks for a moment about one of them; Dreeza had been sad to hear that Dreth'Kar Greyscales was in the Hopewastes. For her part Kendra had been surprised, although pleasantly, to hear that after helping the felines regain their freedom he had stayed on the island awhile before departing. Of course, she recalls, unlike some - Kendra pulls a face as she recalls the 'High' elves who'd talked to her as if she was just an animal - 'Kar Greyscales had never treated her as lesser, and had always answered her many questions. Dreeza had mentioned another too who had been there awhile, a human she had seen, but hadn't spoken to.

Thinking about 'Kar leads Kendra's thoughts back to Reith again; she has been talking to Eremethal about him every day, about his bravery and how he gave her freedom from death. Reith deserves to be free too. Kendra wonders whether he battled his way through and escaped when the portal opened; that must've occurred by now, it is past the shortest day. Reith is brave and strong and Kendra hopes devoutly that he lives again too.

Her thoughts then lead her to another she knows; how has Galatine been since leaving a year before? He escaped by playing Kan Slaar's wretched games; is he alive still?

Bringing her mind back to the here-and-now, Kendra keeps going, glad that the effects of defeating the Midari still remain. She knows that while sometimes the felines worked together before then, it was often grudgingly. She has always known as well that in older times, before peace was made by the wise ones, the felines were ready to battle each other with little or no provocation; one kin would fight any other to the death, sometimes for territory, for prestige, for vengeance, or even just personal enmity. She might be, as Dreeza insisted on reminding her, a 'young one', but she knows the value of working together with those who are different; she was there both when the felines banded togther to defy the brutal Midari, and in the Hopewastes battling Demons and Undead horrors. It didn't take the wisdom of an elder to see that. It's good to know how much of that remains, she thinks; if nothing else, it'll make her journey easier.

It is time to get back to her home, although maybe she should make a few stops on the way. It's a long way and it would only be polite to give respect to those whose territories she would cross - thanks to Dreeza, she knows who they are. Of course, she will have to explain how she is alive, but the cut that convinced Dreeza that she was of the living had healed thanks to Eremethal's gifts to her. Smiling to herself, Kendra took a deep breath of the beautiful air of home, and walked on.

Some time later...

Kendra listens closely to the call of the wind as it sings through the rocks, signalling Eremethal's everchanging presence. Following its guiding sound she approaches her home in the forested slopes of the mountains, well to the north of where she 'arrived' back in the world of the living. She wonders what - or who - she may find when she reaches her secluded refuge.

She had built it herself, close enough to hear the singing rocks, not so close that they would drown all other sounds. It was primarily made from sturdy branches, interwoven with more slender ones. Kendra liked the wind and rain, that many others complained about. It was of course true that her fur was an advantage few others had, certainly not those she considered friends among humans and elves, and others she had met only after her death, although her fur was thick and plentiful even by feline standards. Parts of the roof and walls lay open to the weather and Kendra had always liked listening to the wind as it blew through the gaps, while she looked up at the starry sky. In cases of weather too fierce even for her, she could close and fasten them securely and remain snug until Eremethal's fury passed.

Now however Kendra approaches with caution; although assured that the lands she had protected before her death had been cared for by Sajan, she remains wary. She knows little enough about Sajan; he is her brother, but she had seen him only once in two full turns of the seasons before the Midari had invaded. She feels glad now glad to know he survived, but he was the most secretive and elusive of them all, even more so than the rest of her kind, who lived scattered throughout the mountains. Still, he cared about the lands she loved, that much she had always known, and she knows that he would have guarded it well. Moving slowly and carefully, Kendra makes her way towards the home she hasn't seen for over a year, guided by the singing of the rocks.

A strange scent is carried on the wind, causing Kendra to stop and take notice. It is not that of her brother, or indeed any of her kin, but that of another feline, perhaps even more than one. As she sniffs the air more intently, she notices a slight movement in the trees above her. A small female leopard beastkin appears on one of the lower branches, eyes slightly wider than usual, betraying her fear. Although she is not particularly big, her fur is dark and course, suggesting age, and she has a long scar down one side of her body. There is something slightly familiar about her, but Kendra can not remember her name. She stares at the snow leopard beastkin for a moment, then speaks in a voice that seems far calmer than she appears.

"I thought you were dead. Have you come to claim your territory?"

Kendra wonders what to say; having failed to recall exactly who this is, she is also getting tired of having to prove she's not undead. "Well as you can see, I'm not dead" she answers the stranger, "and yes, I am back to tend this place; I've been away from my home longer than I wanted to be" She cocks her head to one side and surveys the smaller feline, "Do you intend to make a claim?"

There is a pause while the female studies her carefully, and then she visibly relaxes.

"No, I do not make a claim to your hunting ground, if you are happy to let me leave freely. Our kin are no longer enemies, and so there is no need to fight." The fear comes back into her eyes for a second, but she shakes her head and it is gone.

Kendra is still away of another scent nearby, similar to this one, but fainter.

"I harm only those who seek to harm me, or this place, or who would try to take it from me and claim it as their own" Kendra tells the leopard-kin, "if you are not trying to attack me or steal from me, I have no reason to attack you. I don't waste time or effort attacking others unnecessarily" At this point Kendra realises she's Really hungry, "I will be hunting soon" She sniffs the air for any scent of potential prey, or trouble.

"Then I will leave your territory and let you eat." The leopard-kin leaps back up the tree and collects something from the dark leaves above. For a moment Kendra can't see what she is doing, all she can hear is a rustling. Then the feline appears again, a small leopard-kin cub clinging to her back, its eyes wide but bold.

Kendra involuntarily smiles at the sight of the little one. Her voice softens as she speaks, somewhat more quietly. "If hunting is bad, come and find me; no kit starves while I'm around"

With that she moves away, allowing the mother with her kit plenty of clear space, and heads towards her home by the singing rocks.

Some weeks later, Kendra has thoroughly re-acquainted herself with herr old home. There are signs that others have been tending the place while she has been 'away' but little activity recently. Kendra has sung her Song of the Departed over the graves of those she knew, which sometimes led to 'interesting' conversations with those who had sung that song for Her. It has been the only time she has left her home lands. Kendra avoids the site of her own grave, she was buried in her own territory and so cannot keep away completely but it still makes her shudder to think of the corpse of the Kendra murdered by the Midari lying there in the ground, albeit almost gone by now and already contributing to new life from within the soil. She also wonders where Sajan is; she was told he lived still, but no one seemed able to tell her where he was, or could recall seeing him recently.

Kendra has been trying not to think about the day of her death, nor the year and more she spent in the Hopewastes; that bleak and hellish land of death. However, she knows that she will Not forget those she met in the Land of the Dead, the brave souls she fought alongside while rebuilding the destroyed Bastion of Hope and later struggling for her very existence. In her previous life here on the Island those who lived there knew only as 'Home', she had always preferred her own company, and that of the wind as it sang to her of her god's presence. She generally saw only those who lived nearby, and of course her mentors, those who had helped her to discover the magic of nature and life. However, she had returned to life with a realization of how much friendship could change the course of a person's 'life' and those around her. Much as she had hated being in the Hopewastes, and would wish it on few folk, except the Midari who All belonged there as far as she was concerned, Kendra had over the past few weeks found herself missing the people she had met there. The daily struggles of trying to rebuild and strengthen what good lay within the dead land while fending off the attacks of demons and undead had shown her just how much people could achieve working together for a common goal, even more than the time battling the Midari had done for both herself and the other Felines here on the island.

Kendra has made her decision; she is going to head for the mainland of what she now knows is called 'Velmaneth' and seek out her friends, those she hopes escaped the Hopewastes by defeating Kan Slaar's game, or those who might be able to tell her what had happened. Reith Has to have escaped! Dreth'Kar, Alvar/Derwent, Aquilla and the others she had come to call 'friends', she has to know their fate. Galatine too; she knows he returned to life before, but she wants to find him and tell him she is alive now. Kendra has no intention of abandoning her grove, it is her home and she loves it, so she needs to find someone who will tend it while she is away. Kendra sits for a while, listening to the wind as she thinks about about who will be the best choice, who both would and could care for her Home by the Singing Rocks until she returned.
